Marshall's Beach - San Francisco

Es un privilegiado rincón al noroeste de San Francisco, USA. Su acceso es posible desde Lincoln Boulevard, en lo alto de los acantilados. Siguiendo el Batteries & Bluffs trail y tras recorrer un corto camino de 0,5 km. se puede llegar a esta playa tranquila, vacía de multitudes, relajante y luminosa, bañada por el océano Pacífico.

It is an exceptional spot northwest of San Francisco (USA). Its access is possible from Lincoln Boulevard , on top of the cliffs. Taking a short hike (0.3 miles) on the Batteries & Bluffs trail, you can reach this quiet beach, empty of any crowds, relaxing and luminous, bathed by the Pacific Ocean.

Una vez en ella, el único sonido que llega a nuestros oidos es el susurro de las olas llegando a la arena. Tiene una disposición ideal para disfrutar del atardecer, que con sus luces amarillas y naranjas, pinta de color la ladera de los acantilados que rodean la playa.

Once there, the only sound that gets to your ears is the murmuring of the waves breaking in the sand. Its location and orientation is perfect to enjoy sunset, wich dyes the cliffs around the beach with yellow and orange lights.

Además del mar, la única vista desde la mísma son las tierras del Golden Gate National Recreation Area y cerrando la playa por su extremo norte, el majestuoso Golden Gate Bridge, pleno de colores rojos con las últimas luces del día y hacia el que se dirigen todas las miradas.

Apart from the ocean the only other view is to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and closing the beach to the north, the majestic Golden Gate Bridge, full of red tones at the twilight and catching everybody's eyes.

Estando en Marshall's Beach estás en la ciudad, pero estás ajeno a ella, a sus sonidos, a su actividad.... Es un rincón lleno de paz y tranquilidad y quizá el mejor lugar para disfrutar en silencio la vista del Golden Gate Bridge.

Being in Marshall's Beach, you are in the city but far from it, its noise and its activity. It is a corner filled with peace, tranquility and maybe the best to quietly enjoy the view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

CRATER LAKE II

Atardecer sobre Crater Lake con Wizard island en primer término

Dentro del mísmo solo dos cuerpos sólidos, la isla Wizard de 234 m. sobre la superficie del agua, es un clásico cono de cenizas rojas expulsadas por alguna erupción de la caldera posterior al colapso de la montaña y el denominado Phantom Ship, otra diminuta isla de 49 m. sobre el nivel del agua, formada por restos solidificados de corrientes de lava del extinguido y muy anterior Phantom Cone. Esta pequeña isla, con unas luces parece desaparecer, para luego reaparecer cuando cambia la luz.

Inside the lake there's only 2 solid bodies, Wizard island which stands 767 feet above water level and is a classic cone of red ashes from a later eruption, and the so called Phantom Ship, a tiny island 160 feet tall, formed by solidified lava from the extinguished Phantom Cone. This island seems to appear and disappear depending on the light changes.

Esta superficie de agua está rodeada de acantilados de hasta 610 m. de altura, algunas de cuyas paredes presentan colores rosados y rojizos que resaltan especialmente con las primeras y últimas luces del sol.

This body of water is surrounded by cliffs up to 2,000 feet in height, whose walls present pink and red tones that particularly stand out with the first and last rays of sunlight.

Las flores, los bosques de hemlocks, abetos, pinos, forman frondosos bosques en sus alrededores llegando hasta el mísmo borde de la caldera y hacen posible que abundante vida salvaje como osos, linces rojos, ciervos, marmotas, águilas, halcones.... habite en ellos.

The flowers, hemlocks, firs and pines create thick forests around Crater Lake, reaching the caldera's rim and make possible the existence of wildlife, like bears, bobcats, deer, marmot, eagles and falcons.

CRATER LAKE I

Está situado en el Estado de Oregon, Estados Unidos, dentro de la cadena montañosa de las Cascadas y es un volcán durmiente llamado Monte Mazama. Fue declarado parque nacional en 1902.

Located in the state of Oregon, USA, as part of the Cascade Range, Crater Lake is a dormant volcano named Mt. Mazama. It was declared National Park in 1902.

Cuando llegas caminando al borde del cráter en Crater Lake, el impacto visual es intenso y difícil de olvidar. Son 54 Kms. cuadrados de agua con un color azul intensísimo, distinto a otros azules. Piensas que nunca has visto ese azul, no es el del mar, ni el de otros lagos, ni el del cielo.... es el azul único de Crater Lake.

When you walk to the edge, the visual impact is intense and unforgettable. We are talking about 21 square miles of a very intense blue color, different to any blue you may have previously seen. It's not the kind of blue you would see at the sea, nor any other lakes, nor the sky.... it is Crater Lake's unique blue.

Sus azules aguas estan entre las más claras y limpias encontradas en ningún otro lugar de la tierra.

Its blue waters are among the most clear and clean found anywhere on Earth.

Su belleza es sublime e intentar plasmarlo para un fotógrafo es un reto difícil. Ese azul significa pureza y profundidad. La luz del sol penetra hasta una gran profundidad (como en ninguna otra masa de agua del mundo) y todos los colores del espectro son absorbidos excepto el azul que es reflejado a la superficie desde el interior.

Its beauty is sublime and trying to capture it on camera is a tough challenge. This blue means purity and depth. Sunlight penetrates deep in the lake's water (unlike any other body of water in the world) and all the colors of the spectrum are absorbed except for the blue that is reflected out of the surface.

Este gran cráter se formó debido a la enorme cantidad de piedra pómez y cenizas que la erupción del volcán lanzó al aire hace 7.700 años. El hueco que quedó en las entrañas del Monte Mazama era de proporciones tan grandes que la montaña no pudo soportar su propio peso y colapsó hacia el interior.

This great crater was created by the enormous amount of pumice and ashes thrown out by eruption of the volcano about 7,700 years ago. The void left by the eruption was so big that the mountain could not withstand its own weight and collapsed inwards.

Despues, solo el agua de la lluvia y el agua procedente de la nieve derretida (la zona recibe gran cantidad de nieve durante el invierno), fueron llenando este hueco, dando lugar al lago más profundo de los Estados Unidos, 592 ms. y el séptimo del mundo.
After that, water from rain and melted snow started filling the hole thus giving birth to the deepest lake in the US. 1,942 feet and the seventh in the world.

ABEJARUCOS - EUROPEAN BEE EATER

Los abejarucos (Merops Apiaster), son aves migratorias que llegan a España procedentes de África durante el mes de Marzo. Pasan con nosotros la primavera y el verano y regresan en Septiembre a su lugar de origen, para pasar el invierno en ambientes más cálidos.
The European Bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) are migratory birds that come to Spain from Africa during the month of March. They spend spring and summer with us and leave in September for their place of origin to spend the winter in a warmer environment.

A su llegada se les ve en nuestros campos volar con sus llamativos colores, vuelos acrobáticos y su peculiar canto, desarrollando una actividad frenética para preparar sus nidos, buscar pareja y empezar la cría que traerá nuevos individuos que continuaran la especie.
At their arrival you can see them flying around the fields with their eye-catching colors, acrobatic flights and peculiar song, carrying a frenetic activity to prepare the nest, meet a partner and start breeding to continue the species.

Todo este proceso lo hacen con continuas entradas y salidas de sus "nidos agujero", colocados en pequeños taludes en los márgenes de arroyos, ríos, carreteras....
All this process includes continuous trips in and out of their "hole nests" located in slopes close to the edge of streams, rivers or roads.

Los aficionados a la fotografía y amantes de estas preciosas aves aprovechamos esta actividad para fotografiarlos y quedarnos con su fresca y colorida imagen. Con esta intención un día de Mayo nos reunimos un grupo de amigos, Fernando, Mariano, Pedro y yo. Juan Carlos era nuestro anfitrión de lujo. Sus conocimientos sobre las aves son enormes, su categoría como fotógrafo indiscutible y sus preparativos previos nos hicieron la tarea muy fácil, a la vez que respetuosa con las aves.

Photography fans and lovers of these beautiful birds take advantage of this activity to photograph them and keep their fresh and colorful image. With this intention, one day last May, some of us got together (Fernando, Mariano, Pedro and myself) with Juan Carlos us our host. Para concluir el reportaje sobre Yellowstone, he elegido un último capítulo que se desarrolla alrededor de una fotografía que me ha dado muchas alegrías y que refleja bien como siento aquellas tierras salvajes, donde la vida es dura y difícil, con sus grandes espacios abiertos, la actividad geotermal, la vida animal..... Donde se mezclan situaciones de máxima dureza con otros componentes llenos de delicadeza e incluso ternura, todo ello en un difícil y delicado equilibrio natural.

In order to close out this report about Yellowstone, I have chosen one last chapter about one particular picture that has brought me a lot of joy and reflects very accurately how do I feel about those wild lands, where life is hard and tough, with its great open spaces, the geothermal activity, the wildlife... where there is an amazing mix of extreme difficulty and unparallel delicacy, even tenderness, all of it in an unlikely and fragile natural equilibrium.

Aproximándose a Grand Prismatic Spring

El bisonte americano (Bison bison) habita en Yellowstone N. P. (Wyoming, USA) desde hace miles de años. Aunque es habitual que en invierno los bisontes se acerquen a las zonas de actividad geotermal, lo que a veces les cuesta la vida, no es tan frecuente esa aproximación a finales de primavera.

The American Bison (Bison bison) has lived in Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming, USA) for thousands of years. Even though it is common for them to approach areas of geothermal activity in the winter, which sometimes costs bison their lives, it is not so frequent during late spring.

Grand Prismatic Spring

Aquel día, 16 de Junio de 2009, llevaba un rato tomando fotografías detrás de la Grand Prismatic Spring, la fuente más grande de Yellowstone, cuando un enorme y solitario bisonte apareció por mi derecha y con paso ligero atravesó en poco tiempo la zona. Nubes negras de tormenta en el cielo, apenas atravesadas por algunos rayos de sol, dibujaban un escenario dramático causándome una gran emoción. Esta fotografía capta la presencia allí de este mítico animal y el momento mágico vivido. Así mísmo refleja la gran extensión de aquellos parajes que hace que este enorme ser vivo, apenas ocupe un lugar mínimo en ese espacio natural y muestra la relación entre lo salvaje y la delicadeza del Parque Nacional Yellowstone.

On June 16th, 2009, I had been taking photographs for a while from a hill behind Grand Prismatic Spring, the largest hot spring in Yellowstone, when a huge and lonely bison appeared on the right and quickly crossed the area. The dark thunderstorm clouds in the sky, barely allowing any rays of light, created a dramatic scenary  which caused me great emotion. This photograph captures the presence of the legendary animal and the magical moment I experienced. Thus, it reflects the great extension of the landscape that makes this big mammal look like a tiny part of it and reveals the relativity between wilderness and delicacy of Yellowstone National Park.

While geothermal activity and landscapes rank high on top of the list of Yellowstone's attractions, wildlife is #1.

A pesar de que el terrible frío del invierno y la abundancia de nieve hacen muy dificil la vida allí y un éxito la supervivencia, una gran cantidad de especies animales se han adaptado y desarrollan allí sus vidas. Conviven, se enfrentan, unos para alimentarse y otros para defenderse de los anteriores y entre todos ellos equilibran aquel espacio natural permitiendo un desarrollo vegetal y animal más racional.

Despite the bitter cold of winter and the large amounts of snow, a wide variety of animals have adapted to this hostile environment. Life is hard around Yellowstone, and survival is a great success. These animals live together, fight each other, kill and get killed, all to create a balanced, self-sustainable ecosystem.

Yellowstone es el hogar de una gran variedad de especies animales, es un santuario de vida salvaje y un compendio de la fauna de Las Montañas Rocosas. Muchos de ellos se mueven y realizan sus migraciones dentro del Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem ampliando su espacio vital.

Yellowstone is home to a large number of animals species, it is a sanctuary of wildlife and a compendium of fauna in the Rocky Mountains. A lot of them move around and migrate within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, expanding their vital space.

Bison bison, Bisonte americano, American bison

Es fácil encontrarse y emocionarse por su cercanía con bisontes, osos negros y grizzlies, lobos, coyotes, alces, wapitíes, berrendos, carneros, zorros... entre los grandes mamíferos; marmotas, ardillas, martas, pikas, castores.... entre los pequeños mamíferos; o grandes aves como águilas calvas, águilas pescadoras, halcón peregrino, cisnes, pelícanos blancos, barnaclas, grullas canadienses.... Además de otras muchas especies de aves más pequeñas, peces, anfibios...

It is fairly easy to run into animals in the park and get excited by the proximity of bison, black bears, grizzly bears, wolves, coyotes, moose, elk, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, fox.... among the large mammals; yellow-bellied marmots, martens, squirrels, pikas, beavers.... among the small mammals; or large birds like bald eagles, ospreys, peregrine falcons, trumpeter swans, american white pelicans, Canada geese, sandhill cranes.... Apart from many other species of smaller birds, fish and amphibian.

Bisontes en Lamar Valley 

Si la actividad geotermal es quizá la más singular de las atracciones de Yellowstone, los paisajes son otro de sus puntos fuertes.
Geothermal activity probably ranks on top of Yellowstone's main attractions list, but its landscapes are not far behind.

Río Yellowstone en Hyden Valley

Los espacios más destacados son Hayden Valley atravesado por el río Yellowstone poco antes de entrar en su espectacular cañón, Lamar Valley con el río de su mísmo nombre, ambos frecuentemente llenos de vida salvaje, el Monte Washburn para observar este enorme espacio natural desde lo más alto, el lago Yellowstone o el sobrecogedor Cañón del río Yellowstone con sus desafiantes paredes de colores amarillos, ocres, rosas, sus rápidos y sus enormes cascadas.

The main features are Hayden Valley, crossed by the Yellowstone River right before entering its spectacular canyon; Lamar Valley with a river of the same name, both of them featuring plenty of wildlife; Mount Washburn to observe this huge natural setting from the top; Lake Yellowstone and the breathtaking Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River with its defying walls of colorful rock, rapids and waterfalls.

Otros espacios más íntimos, pero con praderas bellísimas, solitarias y una relajante calma son Sentinel Meadows, Swan Lake, Slough Creek o las suaves lomas que descienden hacia Antelope Creek.

More intimate spaces are Sentinel Meadows, Swan Lake, Slough Creek or Antelope Creek, with their beautiful solitary prairies and soft hills.

Cada rincón del parque es lo suficientemente atractivo para atraparte continuamente, sentir el deseo de pararte en un punto y simplemente mirar, dejar correr el tiempo o dedicar toda tu atención a observar algún animal salvaje que aparece súbitamente para hacerte compañía y mostrarte alguno de sus hábitos de vida.

Each corner of the park is attractive enough to continuously captivate you and make you want to stop and just look around, let time go by or watch any animals that may suddenly show up.

Caminar por alguno de sus cientos de "trails" te llevará a conocer y disfrutar de verdad Yellowstone, identificándote plenamente con sus paisajes y su abundante vida salvaje.

By hiking any of the hundreds of trails in the park you will get to know and enjoy the real Yellowstone, and you will feel part of the landscapes and wildlife.

Giant Geyser, Upper Geyser Basin

Estados Unidos y Canadá componen un medio natural extraordinario. El Oeste de ambos paises estaba aún por descubrir cuando en Europa ya se habian desarrollado ciudades que superaban el millón de habitantes.

Habitado entonces por pequeñas poblaciones de Nativos Americanos, la escasa presencia humana ha favorecido que llegue hasta nuestros días una biodiversidad sorprendente.

The United States and Canada comprise an extraordinary natural setting. The west of both countries was yet to be discovered while in Europe cities where developing populations above one million people.

Uninhabited except for a few Native American settlements, the absence of human presence has favored the existence of a surprising and unknown biodiversity.

Turquoise Pool, Midway Geyser Basin

Las Montañas Rocosas se extienden desde el Norte de British Columbia (Canadá) hasta el Norte de Nuevo México (EEUU). Todo este espacio incluye una naturaleza desbordante e incomparable de bosques, lagos, ríos, montañas y vida salvaje.

En un rincón de estas montañas, ocupando parte de los estados de Wyoming, Montana e Idaho (EEUU) se encuentra el Parque Nacional Yellowstone. Creado en 1872, fue el primer parque nacional en el mundo.

The Rocky Mountains extend from the north of British Columbia (Canada) to the north of New Mexico (USA). This range includes a boundless amount of forests, lakes, rivers, mountains and wildlife.

Yellowstone National Park sits in a spot at the intersection of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. It was founded in 1872 and was the first national park in the world.

Es una enorme caldera de 48 x 72 Kms. surgida de una explosión volcánica hace 640.000 años. Ocupa una extensión de casi 9.000 kms2. que llegan hasta los 80.000 kms2 si consideramos las tierras intactas y salvajes, públicas y privadas circundantes, que forman lo que se conoce como Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

It is a huge caldera 30 by 45 miles across that was created during a volcanic explosion 640,000 years ago. It covers and area of more than 2 million acres which could be considered 20 million acres if we count inactive, wild, public and private lands surrounding it, that compose what is known as the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Grand Prismatic Spring, Midway Geyser Basin

Tiene una altitud media de unos 2.400 ms. en las zonas más bajas y hasta 3.400 en las montañas que rodean la caldera. Esta altitud, unida a las corrientes de aire helado que bajan de las montañas hacia los valles, hace que los inviernos sean muy fríos, se alcancen con facilidad los -20ºC y se den acumulaciones de nieve muy grandes. La vida allí se hace por tanto muy dificil. Por el contrario en el corto verano de Yellowstone, las temperaturas pueden acercarse a los 30ºC. El peligro de incendios es entonces muy alto.

Its average altitude is about 8,000 feet in the lower lands and 11,000 feet in the mountains surrounding the caldera. This altitude, along with the freezing air currents that travel from the mountains down into the valleys, contribute to very cold winters, when temperatures can easely drop below 0F and very large snow accumulations. Life there gets really tough during these months. On the other hand, during the short Yellowstone summer, temperatures can be in the high 80s and the risk of wildfires is very high.

It is a wonderful place for nature lovers and photographers to enjoy without limits.

Bajo la superficie de Yellowstone, debido a la proximidad a la mísma de una enorme masa de magma granítica cristalizada, la actividad geotermal es muy alta, llenando sus paisajes de geiseres, fumarolas, fuentes termales con agua hirviendo y llamativos colores amarillos, naranjas, rojos, marrones y verdes producidos por las bacterias termófilas, que viven y se desarrollan soportando temperaturas altísimas.

Under Yellowstone's surface, due to the proximity of a huge mass of crystalized granitic magma, the geothermal activity is very high, filling up the landscapes with geysers, geothermal waters and hot springs with boiling water and colorful displays of thermophilic bacteria that are able to grow and live under very high temperatures.

Maravillosas y sorprendentes son las zonas de: West Thumb, Upper Geyser Basin con el famosísimo Old Faithful Geyser, Midway Geyser Basin con la espectacular Grand Prismatic Spring, Lower Geyser Basin, Norris Geyser Basin, Mammoth Hot Springs.... todas ellas llenas de colores y fuentes humeantes.

Marvelous and surprising are the areas of West Thumb, Upper Geyser Basin with the famous Old Faithful Geyser, Midway Geyser Basin and its spectacular Grand Prismatic Spring, Lower Geyser Basin, Norris Geyser Basin, Mammoth Hot Springs .... All of them full of colors and smoking hot springs.
