Ballenas jorobadas - Humpback whales

 

La ballena jorobada o yubarta (Megaptera novaeangliae) es uno de los rorcuales más grandes, con una longitud en los adultos de hasta 16 ms. y un peso de más de 30 toneladas.

The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is one of the larger rorqual species, with adults having a length of up to 16 meters (52 feet) and a weight of 30 tons.

Tienes unas características corporales que las distinguen de otros rorcuales, como son una cabeza llena de protuberancias y unas aletas pectorales muy largas, equivalentes a casi un tercio de su longitud corporal.

They have several physical characteristics that differentiate them from other rorqual, like the knobby head and the unusually long pectoral fins, almost a third of their body length.

Son acrobáticas, saltando y golpeando las aguas del océano, a veces de forma repetida y aparentemente juguetona. Pueden bucear haciendo inmersiones de hasta 30 minutos y profundidades de 150 - 200 ms.

They are acrobatic, often breaching and slapping the Ocean waters, sometimes in a repetitive and playful way. They can dive for up to 30 minutes and depths of 150 - 200 meters (500 - 700 feet).

Las yubartas se alimentan solamente durante los veranos y lo hacen en las zonas polares, migrando después a zonas tropicales o subtropicales para reproducirse, pudiendo subsistir el resto del año gracias a las reservas de grasa acumuladas durante la época de alimentación. En estas migraciones pueden realizar desplazamientos de hasta 25.000 kms. al año.

Humpback whales only feed during the summers and they do so in Polars regions, migrating after the season to tropical or subtropical areas to breed, living the rest of the year off the fat reserves accumulated during the feeding season. These migrations can involve trips of up to 25,000 kilometers a year.

Durante años fué objeto de caza agresiva, reduciéndose el número de individuos hasta en un 90% de la población existente. Ahora la especie se recupera lentamente. Pueden realizarse avistamientos en las costas de Nueva Zelanda, Australia, América del Sur, Canadá y Estados Unidos.

For years they suffered aggressive hunting, which reduced their number by 90% of the population. Nowadays the species is slowly recovering. They can be seen along the coasts of New Zeeland, Australia, South America, Canada and the United States.

Bandon Beach

La costa del Estado de Oregon, USA, bañada por el Océano Pacífico, es de una gran belleza y está llena de una naturaleza desbordante. Si miramos su mapa, es una continua lista de parques estatales y espacios naturales protegidos.

The coast of Oregon, USA, bathed by the Pacific Ocean, is of great beauty and full of an overwhelming nature. If we look at the map, it is a continuous list of state parks and protected natural areas.

Podemos resaltar, dejando de nombrar otros muchos, Harris Beach State Park, Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, Cannon Beach y por supuesto, Bandon Beach.

We can highlight, leaving behind many others, Harris Beach State Park, Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, Cannon Beach and, of course, Bandon Beach.

Bandon es una pequeña y relajante ciudad situada a 90 millas al norte del límite con California. Sus atractivos son muchos, pero para los fotógrafos de naturaleza el mayor de todos ellos está sin duda en su playa.

Bandon is a small and relaxing city 90 miles north of the Californian border. There are many attractions but for nature photographers, the main one is its beach.

En ella aparecen por todas partes enormes rocas llamadas "Sea Stacks", unas veces situadas dentro del agua y otras, cuando la marea está baja, ocupando la playa aunque a muchos metros de la orilla.

At it, are displayed huge rocky formations called Sea Stacks, sometimes in the water, sometimes on the beach when the tide es low,but at a distance from the shore for the most part.

Las "Sea Stacks" permiten a los fotógrafos jugar con sus formas, con el movimiento de las aguas del Pacífico que continuamente las envuelven y con las luces del atardecer, pudiendo componer infinitos encuadres, llenos de plasticidad y luces suaves.

The Sea Stacks give photographers the ability to play with their shapes, the movement of the water that constantly wraps them around and the sunset light, providing infinite compositions, full of plasticity and soft lights.

Bosques húmedos templados - Temperate Rainforest

Son bosques situados en zonas de clima oceánico, por lo que reciben gran abundancia de precipitaciones, al tiempo que la cercanía del océano les ofrece temperaturas regulares a lo largo de las estaciones.

They are located in areas with an Oceanic climate, which gives them high levels of precipitation along with stable temperatures all year long.

En los veranos las nieblas son frecuentes, proporcionando humedad constante y unos ambientes más frescos de lo habitual en esa época del año.

In the summers fog is frequent, adding to the constant humidity and a cooler temperature than what would be considered seasonal.

En la Península Olympica, en el Estado de Washington, USA, estos bosques llegan en algunas áreas hasta la mísma línea de la costa.

In the Olympic Peninsula, in the State of Washington (USA), these forests can even reach the shore in some areas.

Crecen en estos bosques árboles como las píceas de Sitka, hemlocks, abetos de Douglas, cedros rojos, etc. Algunos de ellos con cientos de años de antigüedad y alturas de casi 100 m. Tapizan completamente el suelo líquenes, helechos y musgos, envolviendo estos últimos los troncos y formando enormes colgajos que caen de las ramas de los árboles.

Typical of these forests are tree species like the Sitka Spruce, Hemlocks, Douglas Fir, Red Cedar, etc. Some of them are hundreds of year old and can reach heights of 300 ft. Carpeting the forest ground we can find lichens, ferns and mosses, which can also wrap the tree trunks and form huge structures than hang from the trees.

Cuando uno de estos enormes árboles muere y cae al suelo, puede permanecer allí siglos, desintegrándose lentamente y contribuyendo al ciclo de la vida del bosque sirviendo de abono a otros árboles y plantas y de hábitat a pequeños mamíferos, anfibios, insectos, etc.

When one of these huge trees dies and falls to the ground, it can stay there for centuries, slowly disintegrating and contributing to the forest's life cycle by fertilizing the soil or housing small mammals, amphibians and insects.

Entre la fauna de estos bosques podemos econtrar al oso negro, el ciervo de Roosevelt, linces, pumas, mapaches, ciervo de cola negra y buho manchado. 

Amongst the wildlife in these rainforests are black bears, Roosevelt elk, bobcats, cougars, raccoons, black-tailed deer and owl.

Estamos llegando al final del año 2011 y en estos momentos, cuando he pensado en el tema para la siguiente entrada, además del deseo de felicitar la Navidad a todos cuantos lean estas líneas, me he dado cuenta de que el año en que inicié este blog está próximo a finalizar.
We are reaching the end of 2011 and when I was thinking of a new theme for the blog, apart from wishing everybody that visits this site Happy Holidays, I realized that the year in witch I started this blog is almost over.

Han pasado 7 meses desde que arrancó esta idea y el balance lo considero muy positivo. A través del mísmo he podido mostrar algunas de mis fotos, comentar sobre temas que me gustan especialmente y desde luego me ha permitido estar en contacto con todos los que habéis querido visitarlo regularmente.
It's been 7 months since this idea came to life and I think the result was very positive. Through this blog I have been able to show some of my pictures, talk about topics that I particularly like and of course, I stayed in touch with all of you that visit the blog regularly.

Texturas - Textures

Siempre me ha llamado la atención la fotografía de dunas, en las cuales, jugando exclusivamente con las luces y las sombras se pueden encontrar líneas, formas, texturas... que te hacen ver esos enormes montones de arena como superficies mágicas llenas de posibilidades fotográficas.

Dunes photography has always drawn my attention. In these images, just by playing with lights and shadows you can find lines, shapes and textures that make you see these huge mountains of sand as magical surfaces full of photographic possibilities.

Este verano pasado visité el Great Sand Dunes N.P. en Colorado, USA y tuve por primera vez la ocasión de disfrutar de esta magia.

This past summer I visited Great Sand Dunes N.P. in Colorado, USA and for the first time I had the chance to enjoy that magic.

La luz es clave en fotografía y más aún en este juego en el que pretendía participar.

The light is key in photography and even more when it comes to this "game" I wanted to be part of.

Las tormentas que en esa época se repiten en la zona, junto con el color grisáceo de la arena, nos hicieron realmente complicado nuestro estudio sobre este tipo de fotografía. Aún así, la práctica resultó muy interesante.

The storms that occur that time of the year in the region, along with the greyish color of the sand, made our studies of this type of photography really hard, but it was still very interesting.

Mesa Verde N. P.

A esta nueva entrada del blog quiero darle una orientación más documental que fotográfica. Mi idea es comentar y mostrar fotografías sobre un lugar escondido, incluso diría oculto, pero realmente espectacular y atractivo, como es el Mesa Verde National Park, en Colorado, USA.
I would like to give this blog entry a documentary approach rather than photographic. My idea is to show and comment some images of a remote place, almost hidden I would say, but really spectacular and attractive, as is the Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado, USA.

El nombre de Mesa Verde fué dado por los españoles que fueron los primeros europeos en llegar al lugar.
The name Mesa Verde was given by the Spaniards, who were the first Europeans to reach the place.

Situado en el valle de Montezuma, lugar de residencia del ancestral Puebloans, fué habitado a partir del año 550 por los nativos Anasazi, que lo ocuparon hasta el año 1300 aproximadamente.
Located in the Montezuma Valley, homeland of the Puebloans, it was first inhabited in 550 A.D. by the Anasazi, who stayed in the region until around 1300 A.D.

En la zona destacan las edificiaciones de piedra construidas en los grandes huecos de las rocas, en las paredes verticales de los acantilados, a veces situados a 650 m. sobre el valle de Montezuma.

Notable are the stone masonry structures built in huge voids in the rock of the cliffs' walls, sometimes as high as 2000 ft. over the Montezuma Valley.

Son espacios bien construidos, aunque aparentemente sin mucho orden y dedicados a resguardarse de la climatología, de los animales salvajes, habitaciones para vivir y dormir, así como pequeños almacenes donde guardar alimentos y enseres.
They are well built spaces, even though they lack order sometimes, intended to protect from the weather and wildlife, spaces to live and sleep, as well as small storage rooms to keep food and tools.

Se cree que estos pequeños pueblos fueron habitados solamente en los últimos 75 a 100 años de los Anasazi en el valle. Posteriormente lo abandonaron, sin que se conozcan hasta el momento los motivos de tan brusca desaparición.
It is believed that these small settlements were only inhabited the last 75 to 100 years of the Anasazi in the valley. Afterwards, they abandoned them and it is not clear to this point in time, which were the motives for such an abrupt disappearance.

Paisaje minimalista - Minimalist landscape

Conocemos como minimalismo la corriente artística que utiliza elementos mínimos y básicos, donde todo queda reducido a lo esencial, abandonando los elementos sobrantes. Se ha aplicado en pintura, arquitectura, escultura, diseño, música, gastronomía o como forma de vida. Quizá tambien podemos aplicarla en fotografía y una vez en ella, en paisaje.

We know minimalism as the artistic movement that uses very few and basic elements, where the work is stripped down to its most fundamental features, away from unnecessary elements. It has been applied to painting, architecture, sculpture, design, music, gastronomy or even as a way of life. Maybe we can use it in photography as well and why not in landscape photography.

Con estas fotos que aquí muestro quiero hacer un ensayo sobre el tema, reduciendo los elementos que figuran en los encuadres a poco más que algunas pequeñas formas, la luz y un elemental juego con el balance de blancos.

With these pictures I am showing here I wanted to experiment with minimalism, reducing the elements in the compositions to just a few shapes, light and a very simple play with the white balance.

Las cuatro primeras fotografías fueron tomadas tras la puesta del sol en Fisher's Towers, cerca de Moab, Utah (USA) y solo se tuvieron en cuenta las formas simples del terreno en la parte inferior y la luna pequeña y muy alta en el encuadre.

The first images were taken right after sunset at Fisher's Towers, near Moab, Utah (USA) and I only considered the terrain's shapes in the lower part of the composition and very high up and small, the Moon.

Las cuatro siguientes fueron tomadas en el distrito de Needles, en Canyolands N. P., Utah (USA), "dentro" de una fenomenal tormenta que nos hizo dudar entre permanecer tomando fotografías "con trípode" o correr a buscar cobijo dentro del coche. Así mismo, simples formaciones rocosas y la luz creada por la fusión de los rayos del sol del atardecer y la cortina de agua, fueron los únicos elementos incluidos.

The next four images are from the Needles district in Canyolands N.P., Utah (USA), under a phenomenal storm that made us consider if staying outside taking pictures with a tripod was a better idea than running for shelter back in the car. Here as well, the simple rocky shapes and the mixed light of sunset rays filtered by a water curtain, were the only elements included in the photograph.
