En esta entrada las fotografías tienen solo un valor documental. En aquel rincón escondido de la selva tropical de Cape Tribulation, Queensland, Australia, lo importante no eran las fotografías, sino la posibilidad de localizar un casuario. Con suerte, ya que es un ave muy dificil de ver en su entorno, encontramos un ejemplar picoteando en un arroyo. La emoción fué total, el deseo de mirar por el visor de la cámara escaso. Había que disfrutar mirando directamente la ocasión única que estábamos viviendo.
On this entry, the images only have documentary value. In that hidden corner of Cape Tribulation's tropical rainforest, Queensland, Australia, what really mattered weren't the pictures themselves, but locating a cassowary. Luckily, because it is rare to run into one of these birds, we found one pecking at a stream... We had to enjoy that unique occasion we had the chance to experience.
El casuario (Casuarius casuarius) es un ave de gran tamaño, que no puede volar. Habita oculto en selvas y bosques lluviosos tropicales con mucha vegetación en Australia y Nueva Guinea, donde puede desarrollar su vida de forma solitaria.
The Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) is a bird of big size that can't fly. It lives hidden in tropical rainforests with plenty of vegetation in Australia and New Guinea where they can have their solitary life.
Mide entre 1,50 y 1,80 m. de altura y pesa hasta 70 kgs. Puede correr a 50 km./h y saltar 1,5 ms. Su plumaje es negro, salvo el cuello rojo y azul. Tiene una característica protuberancia en la cabeza. Come frutas que encuentra en el suelo, vegetales y pequeños animales.
They grow up to 1.5 and 1.8m in height and can weight up to 70kg. They can run as fast as 50 km/h and jump 1.5 meters. Their plumage is black, except for the neck, which is red and blue. They have a very characteristic bulge on their head. They eat fruit they find on the ground, vegetables and small animals.
Su carácter es aparentemente tranquilo, pero puede volverse muy agresivo y violento cuando se siente molestado. Entonces puede atacar a sus víctimas saltando hacia adelante, tratando de herirlas con sus poderosas patas acabadas en enormes uñas de hasta 12 cms.
Their character seems calm, but they can turn very aggressive and violent when they feel threatened. They can attack their victims by jumping forward trying to injure them with their powerful legs, ending in claws up to 12 cm long.
Generalmente cada individuo ocupa un territorio y solo en la época de cría la hembra puede moverse por el territorio del macho. Este a su vez es el encargado de incubar los huevos y criar los pollos durante 9 meses.
Normally, each individual occupies one territory and only during the breeding season a female can move around a male's territory. The male is in charge of incubating the eggs and raising the chicks for 9 months.
